Irene Roderick

Irene Roderick has been an artist for most of her life. She has painted and crafted for over 50 years, mostly at home, raising 4 sons and working in retail and restaurant service. Ms. Roderick earned a Bachelors of Fine Arts at The University of Texas in 1999 and a Masters of Fine Arts degree from the California Institute of the Arts in 2001. Her paintings reside in numerous private and museum collections.In 2016, she turned her hand to making quilts and fell in love with the process of making “utilitarian paintings” from fabrics.” She discovered improvisational quilting in 2017, and developed an intuitive, spontaneous process that she calls “dancing with the wall.” Ms. Roderick’s accomplishments include: juried inclusion in QuiltCons 2016, 2017, QuiltCon 2018 (3 quilts), QuiltCon 2019 (5 quilts) and QuiltCon 2020 (3 quilts). Her quilts were awarded the 2ndplace award in the Improvisational Quilts category and 2ndplace award in the Two Color Challenge in QuiltCon 2019. At QuiltCon 2020, her quilt “Line Drawing Landscape” was awarded 1stplace in the Improv category. She also was accepted into Quilt National 2019 and was awarded the Emerging Artist Award and purchase prize of her quilt into the International Quilt Study Museum. In 2020, she has been accepted into the Quilt Visions2020 exhibit at Visions Art Museum as well as Art Quilts Elements 2020 at the Wayne Art Center. Her work can also be seen in most “Curated Quilts” magazine and “Simply Moderne” Magazine, issues 16 and 17. Her quilt “Clinging To The Edge” was included in the 2018 Best of QuiltCon traveling exhibition. She continues to work in her studio daily and teaches her “Dancing With The Wall” improv workshops from home on Zoom these days
