The inaugural edition of Craft Napa, a quilting and mixed-media retreat in world-renowned Napa Valley commenced January 7-9, 2016. Launched by Pokey Bolton–founder of Quilting Arts, Cloth Paper Scissors, and founding host of Quilting Arts TV on PBS–Craft Napa hosted 115 registrants for 21 workshops ranging from quilting and surface design to mixed media over the course of three days. World-renowned teachers from the textile and mixed media realms included Carrie Bloomston, Jane LaFazio, Jamie Fingal, Leslie Jenison, Melanie Testa, Jenny K. Lyon, Lynn Krawczyk, Elizabeth St. Hilaire, and Judy Coates Perez.
Sponsored by BERNINA USA and Miessner Sewing, Craft Napa was held in the heart of Napa Valley at the Embassy Suites/Napa, where students also had the opportunity to partake in a CRAFT NAPA wine blending competition; be in the running to win a brand new BERNINA machine; participate in an artist market; enjoy Napa cuisine and local wine tastings; and join an open house at Pokey’s newly built art barn.
What attendants and teachers had to say:
“Craft Napa was a wonderful event! I learned some new techniques, met new friends, ate at delicious restaurants and visited area galleries. The casual atmosphere and large open central area made it possible to interact with many participants. The instructors were very friendly and encouraged people to come in and see what was happening. Pokey’s positive attitude and inviting everyone to her new barn was a perfect way to cap off the event!”
“All around showed careful planning and impeccable implementation. Thank you!”
“Let me say that I’ve been to several retreats – both as a student and as a teacher. And Craft Napa was nothing like any of the others I attended. This retreat was so community based it was amazing. Everyone approached their classes with an open heart and mind and it was truly all about creating art from the soul. I adored the experience so much.”
“It is hard to describe and may sound overstated, but Craft Napa was unlike any event I’ve ever been a part of. The air was filled with energy and creativity and everyone was so caring, encouraging and supportive.”
“I had a most wonderful time! I knew that it was going to be special given the lineup of teachers and the location all under the organization of Pokey. What I did not know was that I would come away not only with new skills but also with new friends and a new sense of self! The teachers were all giving of their knowledge and inspiration. I can’t wait to return!”
Craft Napa also made headline news in the prestigious Northern CA newspaper, The Napa Register. http://napavalleyregister.com/calistogan/lifestyles/craft-napa-not-your-grandma-s-quilting-bee/article_fe8ac8b4-5ebe-589a-8243-541b1d509e59.html
